The Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop - Stopping by SLU

Lake Union's Scenic Path
A 6-mile trail that circles Lake Union, the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop gives you some of the best views of Seattle’s skyline, houseboats, and waterfront parks. It’s named after Cheshiahud, a Duwamish chief who lived near the lake in the 1800s.
A mix of urban energy and peaceful lake views, the trail consists of a mix of paved multi-use biking, running, and walking paths (through South Lake Union Park, Gas Works Park, and other green spaces); sidewalks (especially through neighborhoods like Eastlake and Fremont); and dedicated bike lanes next to pedestrian lanes (along parts of Westlake and Dexter Avenue). There are some street crossings, especially in the Eastlake and Fremont areas, but overall, it’s smooth and easy to navigate, making it great for walking, running, biking, or even rollerblading.
The SLU Loop
One of the most scenic and urban parts of the 6-mile loop, the South Lake Union (SLU) section runs along the southern shore of Lake Union, offering city skyline views, waterfront access, and multiple parks:
Westlake Avenue North Corridor
As the trail continues west, it enters the more urban and business-heavy part of the South Lake Union section. Along Westlake Avenue North, the loop features sidewalks for pedestrians and a protected bike lane for cyclists, making it one of the safest sections for biking. This area is lined with modern office buildings, coffee shops, and restaurants, and it is a hub for both residents and workers from the nearby Amazon campus.
Key attractions in this area include MOHAI (the Museum of History & Industry), which showcases Seattle’s rich past, and Mbar, a rooftop bar with fantastic views of the lake and downtown skyline. While this stretch can be busy during rush hours, it provides fabulous views while also being near to all of great dining spots and cultural landmarks in the neighbhorhood.
Fairview Avenue North & Eastlake Connection
This stretch of the trail runs through a more residential area, featuring floating homes, marinas, and peaceful lake views. Fairview Avenue North (~0.7 miles) runs along the lake with a mix of sidewalks and shared roads, passing marinas, and waterfront parks like Terry Pettus Park. Eastlake Avenue (~0.8 miles) is more urban, with sections of bike lanes and sidewalks, connecting to restaurants, coffee shops, and small green spaces along the way.
This section doesn't have a dedicated trail; instead, pedestrians use sidewalks, while cyclists share the road. While the area is generally calm, it can get a bit congested with cars, so be cautious on the narrow roads. This section is also home to a few scenic stops, including Terry Pettus Park, a small waterfront park with floating docks. Dining options include Daniel’s Broiler, a well-known steakhouse with panoramic lake views. The REI Flagship Store is also nearby.
South Lake Union Park
This is the most scenic and pedestrian-friendly section of the trail, offering lakefront views, open green spaces, and historical attractions. About half a mile from end to end, it starts near Fairview Avenue North on the east side and runs westward through the park until it connects with Westlake Avenue North. A wide, paved pathway runs through the park, making it an ideal spot for walking, jogging, or simply relaxing by the water.
One of the park's highlights is the Historic Ships Wharf, where visitors can see restored wooden boats and even board the Virginia V, a historic steamship from the early 20th century. The park is also home to The Center for Wooden Boats, where people can rent rowboats and small sailboats or learn about Seattle’s maritime history. The waterfront boardwalk offers unobstructed views of Lake Union, with benches and grassy areas perfect for a break.
